How Many Thor Movies Are There (Movies Order)

Asgard is an alien world that has been linked to Earth for many years, with many of the early humans considering the Asgardians to be gods, the Asgardians exert a lot of influence on planet Earth.

Thor is also one of the original members of the Avengers, and later a Guardian of the Galaxy.

Checking in the Movie Database I note that there are over 200 movies related to Thor. These include TV Movies, TV Series, Animations as well as more modern Thor Movies. If we are looking for movies related to Marvel Comics’ interpretation of Thor, then we can reduce that to just four:

  • Thor (2011)
  • Thor: The Dark World (2013)
  • Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
  • Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

However, since the launch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) there have been so many crossover movies that a character will appear in movies other superhero movies. this means that Thor will continue his story in many other crossover movies, so when following a character we have to at least acknowledge the existence of other movies.

The MCU is a shared Universe in which all the movies are set.

We will list all the MCU movies and highlight those that concern Thor. In this way, we can follow the characters through the timeline.

The Movies are released in what MCU describes as phases.

First, we will look at Phase 1, and then progress through the first three phases, which brings us up to date. Finally just a brief look ahead at Thor in phase 4.

Jane teaches Thor a great deal about Earth’s ways and this knowledge is what saves them when a villain from Asgard arrives.

This villain is no other than Thor’s adopted brother Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston), who had taken control of Asgard while Odin slept.

Loki is accompanied by a giant automaton called the Destroyer, and the two of them seek out Thor so they can kill him.

The sacrifice and nobility of Thor in the battle against the destroyer allows Thor’s Hammer Mjölnir, to return to him and Thor is deemed worthy to carry it and so becomes the only person who can lift it.

After defeating the Destroyer Thor heads off to Asgard to tackle Loki.

During their struggle, they destroy the Bifröst Bridge and are in danger of falling into the abyss, when Odin awakes and pulls his two sons away from the abyss, but Loki, when he realizes he no longer has the approval of Odin, commits suicide by falling into the abyss.

Thor: The Dark World (2013)

Thousands of years have passed since Warriors from Asgard stopped an alien race called Dark Elves from sending the universe into darkness.

At the time the warriors captured the weapon they were using (The Aether) but they did not capture or kill all the Dark Elves.

Their leader Malekith (played by Christopher Eccleston) escaped so they could try again later.

The warriors were unable to destroy the Aether so they hid it in the present day.

Remember Jane Foster from Thor (2011).

Well, she is still waiting for Thor to return. Since the two parted Thor has been attempting to bring peace to the Nine Realms.

During that time Jane Foster finds an anomaly (like the one that first brought Thor to Earth) and she goes to investigate. In doing so she finds a wormhole and gets sucked into it.

Meanwhile, on Asgard Thor has been asking his father Odin if he can return to Earth.

Odin refuses and subsequently, Thor discovers that Jane Foster has disappeared from Earth.

Concerned, Thor returns to earth and arrives at the same time that Jane Foster returns.

Some policemen try to arrest him and unspecified energy repulses them.

In an effort to discover what has occurred, thor brings Jane Foster to Asgard.

Thor finds out that during her disappearance her paths crossed with the hidden Aether and that it had been absorbed by her.

Malekith senses that this is a good time to attack again and during the attack, Thor’s mother Frigga (played by Rene Russo) is killed protecting Jane Foster.

Odin wants to keep Jane Foster on Asgard to attract Malekith and the Dark Elves, but thor disagrees and with the assistance of Loki they move her through a portal that Loki has found, to the homeworld of Malekith, where they hope to confront him and they the two brothers can have their revenge on him for killing their mother.

The plan goes wrong and Malekith retrieves the Aether from Jane Foster and escapes, but not before apparently killing Loki.

Jane finds another portal in a cave and that portal returns them to London.

They discover that Malekith plans to use the weapon in London to destroy the Universe, but Thor battles with him and eventually is able to banish Malekith back to his homeworld, with the help of the humans.

Thor returns back to Asgard and tells Odin of Loki’s bravery and self-sacrifice, but as Thor is leaving the form of Odin is replaced by a grinning Loki.

During the credit we see the collector being entrusted with the Aether on the basis that having the Aether in Asgard would mean that there were two Infinity Stones to close together in Asgard, as the tesseract is also an Affinity Stone.

This is a hint at what is to come in the Guardian of the Galaxy movie.

So that he can get home Thor has to compete against the defending champion of the Grandmaster (played by Jeff Goldblum).

Thor is back again in this climax to the Infinity Saga.

Following the events of Avengers Infinity War, the Universe is in ruins.

The avengers and any remaining allies determined to reverse what has happened to gather together to reverse what Thanos has done

Thanos has eradicated half the Universe and hit the Avengers hard. This movie represents the climax to all the twenty-two movies in the MCU that have come before. Phases 1-3 of the MCU was all leading to this point.

After Thanos had apparently succeeded in his aims, the Avengers were scattered and in bad shape.

Despite this, they have a way to undo what has happened and must gather once again to take on Thanos.

This will result in sacrifices being made.

After the defeat of Thor, together with the last survivors of Asgard have settled in a small town called New Asgard.

Thor was shattered and had let himself go, binging on fast food, getting drunk, and not taking care of his grooming.

Banner and Rocket seek him out and after a lot of convincing Thor is convinced to join the group in their efforts to overturn what has happened.

After perfecting a mode of traveling time, the heroes set off to gather all the Infinity Stones, before Thanos has a chance to use them.

As part of this Thor goes back to Asgard with Rocket and they steal the Reality Stone and its vaporized version, the Aether.

Once all the stones have gathered the attempt to create a new gauntlet to be worm by Hulk is commenced. They are attacked by Thanos.

However, in the end, the good guys win and everything is restored.

Thor quits as King of Asgard and goes on the join the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Thus concluded the Infinity Saga.

Phase 4

The launch of the new phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the post-infinity Saga era, was hit hard by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

This phase of the MCU has expanded from just the sequence of movies and will include TV series in the same Universe, making the series fit more tightly into the unified timeline.

It is perhaps too early to write a definitive timeline for Phase 4 in vie of the continued disruption from the pandemic, but it does seem likely that Thor will return in 2022, despite his contract expiring after Avengers: Endgame.

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

This movie is still not finished so we can look forward to it.

I hope that seeing how the Thor movies fit into a wide MCU makes an understanding of the Thor timeline that much easier. What happens to Thor after the movie Thor: Love and Thunder is yet to be seen, but with Thor now signed up to the Guardians of the Galaxy, I am sure we will see more.
